Think of Blackpool and immediately the sound of bustling crowds comes to mind, laughter, seagulls screeching, the smell of hot-dogs and candy floss, the sight of donkeys and children running on the beach. Yes Blackpool has all this and more, but it is also full of surprises. If I were to tell you I had discovered a tranquil rural haven where the peace is broken only by the sweet sound of bird song, well within the boundaries of the seaside resort, you probably wouldn't believe me, but I can assure you it's true.

Marton Mere (not to be confused with it's larger neighbour Martin Mere) is a reclusive nature reserve situated near Stanley park and Blackpool Zoo. It's easily accessed via the Herons Reach De Vere Hotel car park.  A series of well maintained footpaths take you on a delightful walk around the hotel golf course, skirting the perimeter of the zoo. It's perfect for all the family including the dog!

Venture further into the heart of the nature reserve, and if you're lucky you might encounter magnificent dragonflies, beautiful butterflies, various small mammals and amphibians and several species of wetland birds.

There are a number of benches dotted around for you to rest and soak up the peaceful atmosphere. Or gaze at the iconic Blackpool Tower, not so far away in the distance, reminding you that you are still only a short drive away from all the fun of the fair!
